WHY I LIVE UNITED?

I joined Twin County United Way because of the fundamental beliefs of the organization, and my strong support in what United Way stands for in our community.  What better organization can you find that does not deduct administrative costs from any donated dollar so that each gift can go to work right here in our community?  This makes presenting on behalf of Twin County United Way as your Campaign Chair for this year an easy sell.

United Way has identified three areas of need across our community and they are in the areas of Education, Income and Health.  We have taken these key points and implemented them into the work we do in the Lewis Clark Valley.  I'd like to share with you how our local work in EDUCATION, INCOME & HEALTH is making a great impact on our community.

EDUCATION

Research shows preschool age years are critical for cognitive and social development, laying a foundation for success in school, work and life.  Our Children's Project was started to socially and academically prepare children for kindergarten.  35% of our children enter school not prepared in the areas of letter & number recognition, & social skills.  To have the maximum impact, we gathered with some of our essential partners to address this problem.  Click here for more information & to see the progress we're making in preparing our kids for school & life.

INCOME

According to the latest Census Bureau numbers, it is estimated that 5,379 people live in poverty in Nez Perce County and another 3,243 living in poverty in Asotin County.  This means that we have over 8,600 people living in poverty in our LC Valley.  Twin County United Way is committed to community-wide change that will disrupt the cycle of poverty and champion programs that contribute to increasing financial stability, assets and job readiness for low income families, and meet basic needs such as food, safety and shelter.  With your help we can turn those numbers around.

HEALTH

Twin County United Way is committed to improving the health of residents in our LC Valley.  We believe we will accomplish this by decreasing substance abuse, increasing access to healthcare, supporting vulnerable populations, and ensuring independence for individuals.

Through Twin County United Way, your contribution will support the building blocks of life and help build strong communities.  As a local United Way, we have identified these three key areas in the LC Valley and have supported many local partnering agencies that service these needs.  With your support of our organization, we will ensure that these three key areas will continue to be served:

  • A quality education that leads to a stable job;
  • Enough income to support a family through retirement, and
  • Good health.

Lewis Clark Valley Chamber Kick-Off

Chamber Kick Off 2011

Our Chamber Kick-Off was a great success. We were able to share with our friends and neighbors the benefits of giving of their time, expertise or funds in order to band together and help us advance the common good. Everyone was informed of the need for pre-kindergarten programs to help prepare children to enter school. Our Children's Project this year worked to meet that need. We thank all who made it out and continue to LIVE UNITED by Giving, Advocating or Volunteering.

Success Story From the Field

 4-H Volunteers LIVE UNITED

4-H volunteers

It was late spring.  Chuck and Francie stopped by the Interlink Volunteers - Faith in Action office to "check us out".  They heard that we provided services they could use - transportation, yard work, possibly a wheelchair ramp.  They had purchased a home some 12 years ago, and Chuck had the skills to complete the finishing touches.  Today Chuck has Parkinsons disease and is steadily losing his ability to garden and do the little things around the house.  A visit to their home explored the front yard which needed quite a bit of work.  We discussed a wheelchair ramp in a succeeding visit.  We received a call from the United Way office of a 4H group looking for a service project.  The group accepted the challenge to make over Chuck and Francie's front yard.  42 volunteer hours later the yard looks great!  In early September the "Second Saturday" volunteers from a local church began work on the wheelchair ramp, completing all but the top side rails and painting, which will be done in October.   Other volunteers began cleaning out the garden, taking several loads of yard waste to EKO.  Chuck and Francie have also enrolled in the "Life Line" safety net since we last met, and began receiving Meals on Wheels two weeks ago.  They are also members of the local Parkinson's support group.  This story reminds me, and hopefully you, that the "good life" we seek as we age takes many community resources to become whole.  Well done, Lewis-Clark Valley.  God bless you.
